Delhi University Colleges Issue Guidelines Ahead Of PM Modi’s Visit: No Black Dress, Mandatory Attendance

For those planning to watch the live broadcast of the University of Delhi’s centennial festivities, at which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the special guest, many colleges of the university have issued a list of guidelines that include required attendance and no black clothes.

Today, June 30, is the centennial festivities’ Valedictory Function. As the principal guest, PM Modi will take part in the festivities’ concluding ceremony. Many universities have published announcements requiring staff and students to watch the event’s live transmission.

The Hindu College of the University of Delhi published a notification requiring the students to attend the function. “During the live broadcast of the event, all students must be present. The seven-point instructions said that entering the college should be completed before the start of the first session, or between 8:50 and 9 am, in order to prevent any traffic delays or problems later on the DU campus.

Additionally, the announcement said that students were not allowed to wear black apparel and offered a reward of five attendances for those who watched the live feed.

Anju Srivastava, the principal of Hindu College, said that no such notification had been sent by the government. Apparently, there has been some distortion. The college has not published this message. I don’t know,” she said to PTI. She didn’t dispute the notice’s falsity, however.

“On this occasion, all teachers with their students and non-teaching staff must attend the live web telecast programme in the college,” Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar institution said in a notice.

Zakir Hussain University

In a similar vein, Zakir Hussain Delhi College issued an order that stated: “As per the directions of the University of Delhi, all staff members other than the newly appointed teachers who are physically present at the multipurpose hall, University of Delhi, are mandatorily required to remain present in the college library to view the valedictory function of the centenary celebrations.”

Principals of a number of other colleges in the university, however, made it clear that they had just “requested” that the teachers and students attend the event; no one has really shown up.

According to Registrar Vikas Gupta, there is no instruction about required attendance from the university. Since all students are unable to attend, we have notified the institutions that we will be broadcasting the event live. The plans have been created by the colleges. We haven’t mandated attendance, he said to PTI.

Teachers and students critique the event
In a statement, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) at Delhi University criticised several notifications that had been made public about the Valedictory Function of the Centenary Celebrations.

“As if requiring everyone’s attendance for the live broadcast of the event wasn’t irksome enough, the administration additionally ordered students not to wear any dresses that were black. It is absurd that college and university management would use any measure to quell criticism of any kind in our learning environments, said SFI in a statement.

The silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue in Manipur and the wrestlers’ protest was also attacked by SFI DU.

“A government is called upon to celebrate an institution like Delhi University which was until recently known for its secular, democratic and inclusive culture,” read the statement. “A government which resorts to the most brutal measures against dissenting students, pushes teachers to the brink of suicide, constantly propagates unscientific, communal, corrupt and unsound policies like NEP-FYUP in education.”

As a result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “silence” on the Manipur problem, a group of professors associated with the Congress on Wednesday said they would boycott his visit to Delhi University on June 30.

The organisation said, “The INTEC has chosen to boycott the Prime Minister’s visit to protest against the Indian government’s complacency towards the Manipur crisis and difficulties of instructors and students at the University of Delhi.

In order to “complete all arrangements prior to the Valedictory Function of Centenary Celebrations,” the university recently proclaimed the Eid-ul-Zuha holiday on June 29 as a working day for all university staff. This decision drew harsh criticism.
