Forced to rub their faces against walls and crawl under beds, JU students discover a committee investigating ragging

A committee set up by the university to look into instances of ragging on campus discovered that first-year students at Jadavpur University who stayed in the boys’ dormitory were reportedly forced to rub their faces against the wall and stand on top of almirahs for an extended period of time.

The committee was established after the August 10 death of an undergraduate student who was reportedly killed as a result of ragging on campus.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-191118″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/theindiaprint.com-congress-would-be-led-in-ls-on-the-womens-reservation-bill-by-sonia-gandhi-downloa.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com congress would be led in ls on the womens reservation bill by sonia gandhi downloa” width=”1173″ height=”657″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/theindiaprint.com-congress-would-be-led-in-ls-on-the-womens-reservation-bill-by-sonia-gandhi-downloa.jpg 300w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/theindiaprint.com-congress-would-be-led-in-ls-on-the-womens-reservation-bill-by-sonia-gandhi-downloa-150×84.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1173px) 100vw, 1173px” title=”Forced to rub their faces against walls and crawl under beds, JU students discover a committee investigating ragging 3″>

The study, which was created after hundreds of students who lived in the hostels were questioned, said that they were forced to strip down to their underwear and do exercises including standing on top of an almirah, pressing one’s face against the wall, performing “frog jumps,” and crawling beneath the mattresses.

The freshmen, known as “bachcha” (child), were allegedly made to wash their seniors’ clothing, do their homework, and conduct errands, such as buying alcohol, cigarettes, and food from surrounding markets at odd hours.

Additionally, was said that the freshmen were made to scream obscenities at the female inmates in the nearby police quarters and that refusing would result in a beating.

The first-year student had passed away after falling from the guys’ hostel’s balcony. His relatives claimed that he had been raped.

According to the report, what occurred that evening was not just an isolated case of ragging but rather a common occurrence.

After the victim was taken to the hospital in a yellow cab at approximately midnight on August 9, it was reported that a group of boarders cleansed the accident site with water on the advice of one of the elders.

“Information regarding the subsequent movements, just prior to his fatal fall, is rather uncertain and vague, as none of the witnesses gave a clear-cut description of the incident, which could help in ascertaining the cause and sequence of the mishap,” it was stated.

The victim, according to the committee, was the target of severe, premeditated ragging that may have involved sexual abuse.

Thirteen persons were detained in connection with the investigation, all of them were either past or present pupils.
